ALMERÍA EN LA MIRADA: José María Mellado transforms Almería into an open-air photography museum.
From May 13 until the end of December 2024, Almería hosts the exhibition ‘Almería in the gaze’, an innovative exhibition by photographer José María Mellado. This exhibition consists of 20 photographic installations distributed on party walls, lots and facades of the La Chanca-Pescadería, Almedina Historic Center and City Center neighborhoods. “We are using the city as an exhibition hall and the walls as a canvas,” said Mellado, highlighting the uniqueness and magnitude of the initiative.
The route begins with an 18-meter tarp on Lachambre Street and extends for three and a half kilometers. The installations, which include aerial views and portraits of local figures, capture the essence of the city. The work ‘Concordia’ stands out, located in a historic building in Plaza Granero, which presents portraits of neighbors and merchants, giving new life to an abandoned house.
José Luis Bretones, writer and collaborator of the project, points out that photos located at points other than the place of origin generate a surprise effect, inviting us to look at the city with renewed eyes. Full text José Luis López Bretones
The exhibition has an interactive map on the Almería Camina website, with detailed information about each work.
The Camina Project, supported by the Government of Andalusia and the European Union, seeks to connect cultural and neighborhood agents to value the cultural diversity and heritage of Almería. Councilor Amalia Martín expressed that this exhibition “turns photographs into a route with a notable tourist, cultural and social attraction”, inviting the residents of Almería and visitors to enjoy this resource.
